News Happy New Year As we start this year it is a time to reflect on the past and also look to the future. Since installing a new Lely A4 robot in June 2011, we continue to learn and change every day. Shifting technologies is never easy, but we are convinced that robotics will revolutionize the dairy industry just as the milking machine once did. It never ceases to amaze us how well the robot attaches (at least most of the time). Our family was fortunate to all be together over Christmas in sunny Jamaica. Thanks to Shane and Janet for working over the holidays. We are blessed with two very good and caring employees. The classifier visited last week resulting in 2 new VG's, Legacy Jasper Hazelnut and Legacy More Delegate. Our herd production is slowly returning to almost previous robot levels. Small changes in breeding selection will no doubt take place over the next few years in order to fine tune the udder conformation to the robot. It is interesting the EastGen has robotic bulls available now. The Gwen and Glace families are doing very well in the robot environment. Both are on a flushing program and we have a few embryos available for sale. Lauthority and Windbrook bulls are being genomically tested from this family for Semex. We continue to milk 4 generations from this family. Guidance's daughter, Legacy Bonaire Garland classified GP83, after a rough start to her lactation. Until next time, Karen and Steve
Merry Christmas Everyone Time just keeps rolling by and we missed November news completely. After being away for 10 days holidays, we jumped back into many meetings, Royal Winter Fair, corn harvest and winter preparations. I have decided not to book time away in November again. Legacy Allan Gwen moved up to 94 EX after the last classification and is also a 4 star brood cow now. Her daughter Legacy Baxter Generous went VG 88 for Eramosa and Patience Holsteins. Congrats to you guys. The Glace family is developing some longevity in the herd. We are milking 4 generations with Legacy Outside Glace, Legacy Allan Gwen, Legacy Goldwyn Guidance and the 4th is Legacy Bonaire Garland. Many other members of this family continue to produce well in the herd too. Congratulations to Alfred and Daryl Moyer on purchasing Legacy More Compassion who topped the Perth Club Sale last October. We wish them much success with this girl. Wishing you all the Joys of this beautiful Season, God Bless, Karen and Steve
Steve and Karen, along with our long term employees Shane Blatchford and Janet MacDonald , wish you a Very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2012. Happy Thanksgiving. Fall is upon us and we are having wonderful weather this week. Let's hope it lasts until Dec 1st... Devon O'Hara classified yesterday leaving 3 new VG 2 yr olds. Legacy Goldwyn Robecikia, Legacy Goldwyn Gladiolia and Legacy Baxter Ginger all scored VG 85. Legacy Outside Robbie, Legacy Outside Glace and Malibu Goldwyn Terryaki all got an extra E. He is coming back to look at Legacy Allen Gwen for another E as well. Legacy More Rave and Legacy Goldwyn Valentine got moved to VG 88. Legacy Dolman Remember, Legacy Goldwyn Dollar Sign and Legacy Goldwyn Guidance all got moved to VG 87. Legacy Allen Gwen Ex 92 3* was flushed Oct 5 and had 32 fertilized embryo's by Lauthority. Needless to say we have some for sale. Congratulations to Ron and Debbie Riddel on Legacy September Storm Cornucopia on achieving her 2nd E. Also Congrats to Kory Dietz on Legacy Stormatic Chicket on getting a 2nd E as well. Have a good October. Later,
Welcome back to the Legacy. After settling into a new routine, we are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our new A4 Lely robot was operational June 14 and the experience was similar to having a baby, only we are mid 50's thus extra stressful... The renovations in the parlour should be done by months end. Looking forward to everything being completed by winter. The cows adjusted faster than the owners. Lely has created a marvelous milking machine and when it works correctly things could not be better. The challenge now is to keep it and us learning how to maintain tip top condition. The training has been a challenge and Lely is busy solving this issue. This month the classifier arrives. Stay tuned. Legacy Bolton Skyblue's index jumped to 2656 LPI. She currently is in her second lactation and classified as VG 87. At present she has settled in well with the robot. Legacy Allen Gwen and her dam Legacy Outside Glace are both fresh and are adapting well to the robot too. They will both be flushed this fall. Until next time, enjoy the fall.
This month we are combining the May and June news. It has been slightly crazy here as we are installing a Lely A4 robotic milker. As a result we lost our 12 tie stalls and 12 freestalls. As of this week we will have 13 more freestalls completed. The robot should move into its own room by midweek, but we don’t anticipate milking until the last week of May. In the Perth County Breeder’s Cup Legacy Outside Robbie was recognized as first place over 60,000kgs milk. She is Ex 903E in her 5th lactation and due this fall. She has a VG Final Cut daughter here and a Redesign heifer at Ronbeth Holsteins, Hastings, ON. Her dam is a Legacy Leader Robust VG. In mid May we flushed Legacy Bolton Skyblue to Lirr Drew Dempsey and Legacy Bolton Generous to Comestar Lauthority. We have 5 embryo's out of each flush for sale. Please contact us if you are interested. They will also be flushed again in the near future. Until later,
The smell of spring is finally in the air after a cool start to the month. We still have some snow on the ground but it should disappear in a few days. Much slower start to the seeding than last year as we had grain in by April 2 last year. Patty Jones was out to picture 3 cows early in the month.
Contact us if you are interested in embryos. Happy seeding and warmer weather. Winter is still hanging around here. Steve and I are finally getting our legs back under us after returning from 17 days in India during February. We had a fantastic time with the Gay Lea group learning about India’s cooperative model in the largest milk producing country in the world. Cows everywhere, 1.2 billion people and splashes of vibrant colour, ancient culture and extreme poverty completed the tour.
We had the classifier on Feb 1st which was really lucky because the next day was windy and snowy. Wiarton Willie did not see his shadow on the 2nd so here is hoping for an early spring. Classifier result: Three new VG’s. 1. Legacy Bolton Skyblue VG 86. Picture on showcase. We also had Legacy Champion Seamless go EX 2E this round. If anyone needs a location in Vancouver, the properties are going fast. See Scott Dolson for your real estate needs. Have a good February. Happy New Year to all. The holiday time flew by during which we had a great visit with family and friends over the season. Jordan, Scott and Meg have returned to Vancouver while we try and get adjusted back to our regular routine as empty nesters. Last month the indexes came out. Dec 2010 genetic evaluation highlights are…. Three cows are top cow candidates for genomic testing. Legacy Bolton Generous VG 2yrs LPI 2543 ranked 82nd. She was flushed Dec 2 and had 15 embryo’s by Windbrook. We are planning on flushing her again soon.
Legacy Bolton Sky Blue GP 83 2 yrs LPI 2430 ranked 129th. She just calved Jan 5 and will be ready to flush in early spring. Legacy Goldwyn Dollar Sign VG 86 2 yrs LPI 2412 ranked 139th. She has a Bolton heifer born in October and is due in August. Have a great January. Later, Karen and Steve
Happy Christmas Season everyone. The classifier visited Perth County last month resulting in a new Ex for Legacy Sept Storm Cornucopia who now resides at Ron and Debbie Riddel’s in Milverton. Congratulations to the Riddel’s in getting her Ex in their new robotic free stall barn. Dave Wideman deserves congrats also in the nomination of Verda Jasper Thyme for All Ontario Senior Yearling. Thyme is out of Verda LL Theresa Ex 94. Thyme’s VG Goldwyn and September Storm sisters live in the Legacy herd. As we get closer to Christmas we are excited to see our kids again. These times together are so precious. Wishing you all the best at Christmas and have a wonderful 2011. Karen, Steve and the Legacy Girls.

The first hint of fall is coming fast with leaves falling and our trees back the lane turning colour already. This morning the air was crisp and cool which was a welcome change from the hot humid heat of last weekend during which Steve and I made good use of the pool. We are collecting some feature animals for our 25th Anniversary Sale on October 13 at Carson’s in Listowel. The first one is Malibu Bolton Tapioca who went VG as a first lactation heifer out of Malibu Morty Tapestry VG 88 with the next 2 dams excellent. On a family note, Jordan has graduated with her Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Western Ontario. She is coming home for her graduation the end of October. Yippee…. Scott is busy setting up open Houses and trying his expertise in the real estate market in Vancouver. Meg starts her program in BCIT in September in Interior Design. Check out her new blog http://labelladesign.blogspot.com Until next month.. Karen and Steve
We had 2 weddings of close friends children this summer. This one was taken at Bev and Marvin's Reesor's daughters wedding in the Kempenfelt Centre, Barrie, August 7. We are with Sharon Massey from Illinois, and Donna and Scott Houghton from Kitchener. Great time to rekindle friendships and dance up a storm....
Happy Summer Everyone, On July 2 the classifier made both Legacy Champion Seamless and Malibu Goldwyn Terryaki Excellent. This was a first for us to have 2 Excellents in one day. The 2 yrs olds did well with Legacy Baxter Sugar, Legacy Dolman Remember, Legacy Final Cut Sandbox and Verda Buckeye Tamiko all going VG. The Listowel Fair was July 15-18 and Lee Mayes did well showing Malibu Shottle Traincar finishing for Reserve Champion for their club achievement day and was 2nd in the open show. Immediately after the fair we tried to get all the 2nd cut into the bunk between rain storms. What a year it has been for rainfall. During the last 5 days we have had 2.5 inches again. With all the heat and moisture the corn is fantastically tall and cobbing out nicely. Legacy is having a Select sale again this October in conjunction with the Perth Waterloo Club Sale. More details to follow. Have a great summer and enjoy the extra daylight hours while it lasts.
The summer rush has started and every weekend in June and July are just about full. Scott and Meg are coming home for a visit June 19 -July 2 and Jordan heads back out to Vancouver June 28th. Boy am I going to miss them all. Before everyone departs we want to squeeze in a trip to the cottage for all 5 of us. We have not been able to do that for at least 6 years.... The 4Hers are still busy with their calves. Listowel Fair is July 15-18th. I am organizing the ice cream scooping booth again and we will be serving all Canadian ice cream....so good....
What a great spring we have had. Everything is planted and growing. We had almost 2 inches of rain last weekend which has accelerated things very much. Thank goodness as it was as dry as a bone....
Happy Spring, March has been wonderful and the first week of April was spectacular. We sowed our direct seeding April 3rd which is a record for us. As I write this it is raining nicely and the fields are greening as we speak. The classifier visited March 19 resulting in two more VG 2yr olds (Legacy More Compassion and Malibu Bolton Tapioca). Legacy Outside Glace went 5E in her 7th lactation after producing 100,000 kilos. Verda Thelma Gold moved up to VG89-3yrs. Congratulation’s to Cory Dietz on Legacy Stormatic Chicklet going Excellent. It is so satisfying to have family members of herd mates doing well in other herds. Legacy Bolton Skyblue went GP 83 and has LPI of 2756 placing her in 106th position in Canada. We are looking forward to improving the herd with young cows like this. Next step is genomics. Drop by Brubachers April 17th for the Fradol sale (Tom and Donna Dolson). There is something there for everyone. Have a good April. Karen and Steve
It has been slightly busy getting back from the Olympics. We had an amazing Olympic time and had to take every opportunity to see as much as possible. We had hockey tickets for the Gold women’s game and the bronze men’s. The experience was surprisingly emotional as Canada did us proud cheering for what ever team played. Despite all the crowds and excitement, people were patient, kind and generous. O Canada was often heard spontaneously sung walking down the street. On a sad note Steve’s Mom, Georgina passed away on Feb 18. She always had such great presentations skills and left this world 40 years ago to the day that her husband Frank did. Frank and Georgina influenced the Holstein industry in Peel County during the early days. Georgina loved the Holstein industry and its community. We will miss her greatly.
The weather continues to create a challenge this week as snow squalls off the lake are closing some roads and cancelling our local schools. My families’ Christmas was cancelled due to weather in Dec so we rescheduled for this Sat Jan 30. Here is hoping we don't have to cancel again.
Happy New Year to everyone.
Merry Christmas to all,
Happy Long dark nights….. This is the time of year we must embrace late fall and early winter. Luckily The Royal winter Fair, corn harvest and some construction are keeping us busy.
The rain is making silo filling challenging after we enjoyed a dry sunny September. To make things more interesting we are building a new nursery, shop and machinery shed and also adding a small addition to the dairy barn for an office. The contractors are hoping to wrap it all up in one month which would put us in before the snow flies..... Crossing our fingers on this one..
Can not believe the summer is over and school in this area starts September 1st. What happened to starting after labour day??
Hello again,
>Summertime is supposed to here but our thermometer speaks otherwise. The corn needs heat but the lawn and hay ground are doing well.
Hello again. Well this spring has been some what disappointing weather wise. We are still waiting for the nice sunny warm days but are lucky that our corn is in and just up. The first week is forecasting lower than normal temperatures but we think a little drier. The tomotoes, peppers and broccolli plants are still in the boxes as the garden has been too wet to plant....
The daffodils are blooming finally. We got some alfalfa in the ground in mid April but since then it has been wet, wet, wet…. As I write this it is pouring rain again.
March has again flown by and we had the classifier a few weeks ago. The results were solid with no real ringers. We got one new VG 2 yr old (Legacy More Rave), 86 pts, a More out of a VG Allen plus 3 other VG's. Legacy Sept Kay, Legacy Blitz Candy and Malibu Goldwyn Terraki which are all 2nd lactation animals. Candy's Lorenzo sister went 2E-91 points. Also Legacy Allen Gwen moved up to Ex 92. We were pleased to announce the sale of Gwen's Baxter March 08 yearling to Eramosa Holsteins and Patience Holsteins. Legacy Baxter Generous is housed at JEM Cattle Management in Guelph along with her sister Legacy Gibson Gillian who just recently was raised to VG 89 in her second lactation. Watch for these family members in the future. They are looking promising.... We have a full sister to Generous just born in March and 4 Shottle pregnancies due from Gwen.
Early April morniing at Legacy. Still snow gracing the ground but that will not be for long Winter is still with us altlhough the snowmobile trails are still not open after our thaw a few weeks ago. We are still hoping for a few more weeks of snowmobile weather before the mud appears.
Steve's Mom's 87th birthday Feb 23 with the Dolson family. She is the gracious matriarch of this family. Flushing Legacy Allen Gwen Ex 91, Legacy Lee Dolphin VG 88, and Verda Gold Thelma VG 85 2 yrs on Feb 10. Stay tuned for results. Note: Gwen's mother Legacy Outside Glace is now 4E 91. She has 2 Shottle pregnancy's. We now have a 5E 8th lactation Lee "Legacy Lee Cracker" who is still going strong in the herd. This lady has longevity.
